How Do I Use A Sustee?
How to Use a Sustee Water Meter
Sustee tells you exactly when your plant needs watering by measuring moisture at root level — no guessing required.
Step 1: Set
Insert the Sustee into the soil at the base of your plant, pushing it down to between the ▼▲ arrow marks on the meter.
-
Place it close to the plant, within a 20cm radius, so it can sense moisture around the roots
-
Make sure the bottom opening is fully covered in soil
-
Keep the top opening above the soil surface
💡 Over time, soil can settle. Check occasionally that the bottom opening is still covered and gently push the Sustee deeper if needed.
Already watered your plant?
No problem. Simply prime your Sustee by placing it in a cup of water until the window turns blue, then insert it into your pot.

Step 2: Water
Water your plant with the Sustee inserted in the soil. When using Sustee for the first time, water generously. This activates the meter and ensures an accurate reading.
-
The indicator will change from white to blue within 20–30 minutes
-
Depending on soil type, this may take up to 1 hour
Approximate colour-change times:
-
Size S: ~3 minutes
-
Size M: ~15 minutes
-
Size L: ~25 minutes
How much water should I use?
Water thoroughly and evenly. As a guide, use ⅕ to ¼ of your pot’s total volume.

Step 3: Monitor
Leave the Sustee in the pot to continuously monitor soil moisture.
Check the colour window:
-
Blue → Soil is adequately hydrated, no watering needed
-
White → Soil is dry, time to water
⚠️ If there is any hint of blue, wait. Only water once the window is completely white.

Seasonal Changes (This is Normal!)
Yes — the colour change will vary with the seasons:
-
Summer: Soil dries faster, Sustee turns white sooner
-
Winter: Soil holds moisture longer, Sustee stays blue for longer
This is exactly how Sustee helps you adjust your watering naturally throughout the year.
