How Long Does a Sustee Last? Understanding Soil Types and Sensor Lifespan

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"How long will my Sustee last?"

The answer depends largely on what your plant is growing in.

Unlike electronic moisture meters, Sustee works naturally with your growing medium. Inside every Sustee is a special core that gradually breaks down through contact with moisture and naturally occurring soil microorganisms. As a result, the lifespan of your Sustee can vary depending on the type of growing media you use.

Average Sustee Lifespan by Growing Medium

Growing Medium Average Lifespan
Organic Potting Mix 6–9 months
Inorganic Soil Mixes 6–12 months
Peat Moss Around 1 year
Bark-Based Mixes 1–2 years
Sphagnum Moss 1–2 years
Hydroculture 1–2 years

Why Does Lifespan Vary?

The white core inside your Sustee slowly decomposes over time. The speed of this process depends on microbial activity within the growing medium.

Organic Potting Mix

Traditional potting mixes contain compost, bark fines, organic matter and beneficial microorganisms. These active microbes help break down the Sustee core more quickly, resulting in a typical lifespan of 6–9 months.

This is completely normal and simply means your soil ecosystem is active and healthy.

Inorganic Soil Mixes

Some specialty plant mixes contain larger amounts of pumice, perlite, lava rock, scoria or mineral components. These mixes generally contain fewer microorganisms, allowing the Sustee core to last longer.

Typical lifespan: 6–12 months.

Bark and Sphagnum Moss

Many orchids, anthuriums and epiphytic plants are grown in bark or sphagnum moss. These media tend to remain airy and contain lower levels of microbial activity than traditional potting mix.

Typical lifespan: 1–2 years.

Hydroculture

Hydroculture systems often use expanded clay balls (LECA) or other inert media. Because there is very little microbial activity, the Sustee core breaks down much more slowly.

Typical lifespan: 1–2 years.

When Should I Replace My Sustee?

Over time, the white core inside the Sustee will gradually disappear. Once the core has been fully consumed, simply replace it with a Sustee Refill.

The outer body of the Sustee is designed to be reused, making refills a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.

Why Refills Matter

Replacing only the internal core means less waste and lower ongoing costs. Many customers continue using the same Sustee body for years while simply replacing the refill when required.

If you're unsure whether your Sustee needs replacing, remove it from the pot and inspect the white core. If it has significantly deteriorated or disappeared, it's time for a refill.

The Bottom Line

The lifespan of your Sustee depends on the growing medium you're using. Organic potting mixes generally provide 6–9 months of use, while bark, sphagnum moss and hydroculture setups can extend lifespan to 1–2 years.

No matter what you're growing, Sustee continues to provide one of the simplest and most reliable ways to avoid overwatering and keep your plants healthy.
